Wedding in the woods
January 24, 2012 by Guy Duke

2012 has bought excitement to Ecclesall woods with the opening of the new J G Graves Woodland Discovery Centre. The new centre constructed from wood fits in nicely with the environment and the other buildings already in existence. In the heart of Ecclesall woods (Sheffield’s largest ancient woodland) this wedding venue has something totally original for you. Throughout the seasons this venue contains a magic and beauty not found anywhere else. Imagine the bluebells in Spring, the bright greens of summer, the most amazing colours of autumn and then the frosty or snowy scenes of winter.

Sheffield wedding photographer and eco ambassador Guy Duke of Duke’s weddings recently cycled to a job in Ecclesall woods in Sheffield to photograph a mock wedding for Sheffield City Council. Guy tries to get around by bike as much as possible and would certainly agree to cycle to any wedding where the couple were environmentally minded and where it was logistically possible. Maybe if there was twenty miles between venues he may have to use a car. The council had asked a recently married couple to come along to this open day where the venue would be tested for civil ceremonies. It was a glorious day and the couple arrived wearing some pretty stylish wedding gear. Always nice to see people thinking out of the box. The mock ceremony was undertaken and then guests wandered outside whilst Guy took the married couple for a wander through the woods. This is the great thing about this venue the potential to get really stunning shots of couples amongst the trees and walking along the pathways.

If you are looking for an alternative wedding venue, if you are looking for an alternative wedding photographer with real creativity then book the venue alison.matthews@sheffield.gov.uk and then the photographer Duke’s weddings.

Woodland wedding

I have recently shot a job for Sheffield City Council who are going to be using Ecclesall woods as a wedding venue. There is a new development being built at the moment at the ex sawmill site. Wedding ceremonies will be conducted from the new building and there is an outside area for entertainment. The woods make a brilliant backdrop to wedding photos especially in Spring or Autumn.

Working Woodlands gallery

last Friday evening (26th February) I photographed the opening of a new exhibition at the gallery in Ecclesall woods. A cold night didn’t bring many people to the dark woods. The artist on show was Simon Kent who sculpts wood. His work is quite sinister and I’m not sure it’s for all. Maybe those of a fragile nature might find it a bit dark and depressing. Very interesting photography material though.

The gallery itself is an amazing structure built by Hector and Cedric. Made entirely of wood it sits well in the woods. It has a very rustic feel to it and contains some great woodwork. If I could I’d buy it and live in it!
