2012 has bought excitement to Ecclesall woods with the opening of the new J G Graves Woodland Discovery Centre. The new centre constructed from wood fits in nicely with the environment and the other buildings already in existence. In the heart of Ecclesall woods (Sheffield’s largest ancient woodland) this wedding venue has something totally original for you. Throughout the seasons this venue contains a magic and beauty not found anywhere else. Imagine the bluebells in Spring, the bright greens of summer, the most amazing colours of autumn and then the frosty or snowy scenes of winter.

Sheffield wedding photographer and eco ambassador Guy Duke of Duke’s weddings recently cycled to a job in Ecclesall woods in Sheffield to photograph a mock wedding for Sheffield City Council. Guy tries to get around by bike as much as possible and would certainly agree to cycle to any wedding where the couple were environmentally minded and where it was logistically possible. Maybe if there was twenty miles between venues he may have to use a car. The council had asked a recently married couple to come along to this open day where the venue would be tested for civil ceremonies. It was a glorious day and the couple arrived wearing some pretty stylish wedding gear. Always nice to see people thinking out of the box. The mock ceremony was undertaken and then guests wandered outside whilst Guy took the married couple for a wander through the woods. This is the great thing about this venue the potential to get really stunning shots of couples amongst the trees and walking along the pathways.

If you are looking for an alternative wedding venue, if you are looking for an alternative wedding photographer with real creativity then book the venue alison.matthews@sheffield.gov.uk and then the photographer Duke’s weddings.

No of course I’m not going to talk about penis sizes and happy marriages that would be inappropriate! This article will look at photography equipment and what’s necessary to be a successful wedding photographer in Sheffield.

Back in the dark room ages when everything was slower, darker, more difficult but in many ways more exciting I used to use real cameras with real lenses and real photographic film. Alas the march of progress plods on like a well-trained Roman army crushing all that stands in the way. Actually spending all your time underground with a red light on surrounded by chemicals probably isn’t wise so maybe I’m better off sitting in front of the screen with the mouse instead.

There was something lovely about all that equipment though. The Nikon FM 2′s we had at university with a fixed 50mm lens were so clear and so simple. Well-made hardy pieces of kit built to last and did. They were the preferred photojournalists camera and so were proven to be pretty much bullet proof. Then there was the Hassleblad Sheffield Hallam Universities photography department’s pride and joy and much guarded and coveted piece of bling. If you were one of the select few to be allowed to borrow it and even take it out then you were obviously sleeping with the right technician! Probably the best piece of engineering in the world this camera was a beauty. The simplicity of the Hassleblad was amazing. The noise it made when the shutters opened and closed was probably as satisfying as breaking the seal on a new jar of coffee. So legend has it these cameras travelled with the American space exploration of the moon and were left there, might even be worth going up there and getting them and then sticking them on E-bay.

The trouble was that you were shooting film, bracketing exposures on a roll film with 12 shots on. So that’s four shots per film with the possibility of it all going horribly wrong. I can’t quite imagine being a wedding photographer having to deal with that amount of uncertainty. As I was discussing with someone the other day maybe that’s why there was more money in photography back in those days as the pressure was much greater, the stakes were higher. Admittedly there are still gremlins within today’s digital era but generally they can be sorted out a little easier and the results are so much more immediate.

I do have a slightly tragic story from the first wedding shoot I did for a friend’s brother in Harrogate. The wedding photography had gone well and it seemed like it was in the bag but the next day whilst nursing a slight hangover as I was a guest as well as photographer (business and pleasure don’t mix and all that) I was on the way home looking at the shots on my laptop when the computer decided to give me the wheel of death. I had no choice do the force shut down by holding down the power button then try to restart. All I got was a question mark on the screen and a sickening noise from within. So, bear in mind that this day is also my 30th birthday and now I’ve got the biggest crisis of my life on my hands. On arriving back in Sheffield I get on to Mac and head off to their shop in Meadowhall. Second bear in mind is that I can’t stand shopping centres. I think this stemmed from when I was young and my mum and my sister used to drag me round Milton Keynes shopping centre. So, enter the Mac shop go to the counter to speak to the man, explain the problem and get a noise a bit like the noise a car mechanic makes when you go in and try and get a quote. There’s me expectantly expecting him to come up with some sort of easy but obviously expensive solution but instead he said “computer says no.” AAAAAAAhhhh!

I went to London that same day as I had a job down there and took the computer to a disc doctor. Again not overly enthusiastic about the hope of saving my computer, and with it my life and career as a wedding photographer. After a month of waiting they came back with a no can do. This did save me £1000 which was more than I’d charged for the entire job. Where were the photos, well, unfortunately because I was starting out I had only a few small capacity memory cards and no external hard drives. I had shot on the cards moved the photos to the computer and then formatted the cards to keep on using them (never do this!) fortunately by the grace of God or whoever graces such catastrophes when you format a CF card the information is still there and until it is overwritten with new information you can retrieve it with computer software. So by the grace of Grace the cards with all of the money shots on, i.e. the ceremony, had not been overwritten and all I had lost were incidental shots. I had still lost almost half of all I’d shot but at least I could give the couple a decent selection of shots, which thankfully they were happy with. The moral to the story is back up, back up, back up. Make sure you have a lot of 4GB memory cards, your computer and at least one external hard drive. You can shoot a few cards then import to your computer and then export to the external hard drive. Keep the shots on the CF card and carry on. This way you have the data in three places, which is just about safe enough. I used to work for a photographer who sent me home with an external hard drive in case his house burnt down. Safety first! Paranoia second! Well I learned the hard way but came out Ok and am still shooting weddings to this day. I do have graying hair though.

I have slightly digressed from the topic I set out to talk about which was camera kit. These days I have gone fully digital. My armory includes a Canon ID body, a Canon 24mm – 70mm f2.8 USM lens, a canon 580 EX flash unit, a MacBook computer, Lacie Rugged external hard drives, and I have two Systems Imaging LTD monolights. Normally I don’t use the studio lights for wedding photography as they take a long time to set up and can cause health and safety issues. Occasionally if there is an area to leave them then it can be nice to have a set ready for group shots.

The usual tactic is to use the mounted camera flash and bounce it off ceilings to give a soft light. The great advantage of all this modern kit is that with the superiority of the modern sensor and the chips the cameras can shoot in very low lighting conditions (all churches) using no flash and produce great clarity and detail. The modern lenses are good, I don’t think as well made as there forefathers but they do have great clarity when pin sharp. The 28 – 70 that I use is beautiful when it’s bang on but does struggle with movement which really winds me up as I like to introduce movement in my shots and because a wedding day is a fluid action packed event.

My set up is BIG which leads back to the title of this piece. In fact after a day of photographing with it your forearm feels the strain. It’s not exactly subtle and so makes it hard to use for those lovely reportage shots when the subject is caught unawares. These days there are some brilliant compact cameras on the market which would come in handy here and which I would like to get soon. The thing is size does count at a wedding. There will always be a few “other photographers” at the event, keen amateurs if you will who will have a bit of money and probably a pretty good digital SLR. Now imagine being the hired professional wedding photographer and turning up with a smaller lens and lesser camera than these guests. How embarrassing and a point of conversation as to what the couple are spending the hundreds on?

In conclusion as the professional wedding photographer you need a bigger lens than anyone else at the wedding and you need to know what you’re doing with it too. A well cut suit won’t go amiss either!

At 7am on Thursday 30th June Guy Duke (Duke’s Weddings, Sheffield wedding photographer) and Ralph Skrimshire left Sheffield and headed north. They were mounted on bicycles with pannier bags one on each side. The day was fair but a little windy which always makes cycling much tougher. Their aim was to reach Scotland in two days traversing 100 miles per day with a stop half way. As you would expect the further north you go the more hills you encounter. The more hills you encounter the slower you go and the more tired you become. Cycling offers a great way to travel as the rider really experiences every inch of the journey and gains an enormous sense of achievement from propelling themselves over large distances. The first day went well although was slower than expected due to the terrain and the wind. The two had made it just shy of 100 miles by 6.30 pm on the first day and were at Kirkby Lonsdale. A pub dinner was needed and a couple of pints of local ale. After this a minor food coma was encountered but soon digested and the two set off again to cover the 10 miles needed to achieve 100 miles. They found a piece of common ground and set up their very basic camp which consisted of tarpaulins, bivi bags and sleeping bags all under the safety of a large oak tree. Sleep came almost instantly and apart from a few stirs through the night the two woke at 7.30 the next morning feeling refreshed although lacking coffee, but grateful for not having been eaten by Wolves.

The next leg of the journey took the pair up and up along the edge of the Lake district and then to flatter ground and faster roads. Coffee was found in Penrith which then propelled the pair at high speed over the next 20 miles. the weather on the second day couldn’t have been better, cloudless sky and a flat calm made for an easier ride. Plenty of stops to re fuel were taken as the calories were burned up rapidly. Mid afternoon and they reached the border of Scotland and the famous Gretna.

As they neared their destination the two stopped in castle Douglas for Fish and Chips. What a great fish and chip shop as it not only sold the aforementioned but was a sweet shop and tobacconist as well not that we needed any of that it’s just that it’s different and made for an interesting shop. The final destination of the travelling pair was a place called Laureston Hall. Right in the belt of The Red Kite Trail which have been re introduced to Scotland. The reason for this journey was to play in a volleyball competition. Rest of the six person team had come by car. Saturday and Sunday were spent playing and our team reached the final although only got the runner up prize. This may have had something to do with the fact that Guy was a little crippled in the Achilles. All in all it was a superb weekend and we certainly appreciated the lift home even if it was a little boring to be stuck in a car.

As well as working as a wedding photographer in Sheffield I also work with local artists and performers as a photographer and web designer. I have recently completed a web build for a friend and client of mine Emily Rose Greenwood. Emily is a very talented circus performer with a massive range of skills all involving strength, agility and coordination that most of us don’t possess.

She had a collection of great images and a pretty cool logo so putting this all together was a really interesting project.

On top of the web build we recently did a photo shoot together. Emily is fairly heavily pregnant and wanted to get some shots of her expanding figure whilst she did some low level silks work. Silks are a long piece of material or pieces of material which are suspended from a frame and on which Emily performs acrobatic manoeuvres.

This is the web link – please have a look. emilyrosecircus.co.uk

Whether the weather is cold or whether the weather is hot we shall weather the weather whatever the weather whether we like it or not.

This rhyme I learned in Thailand whilst living over there and teaching English to Thai kids. We were on a school trip and visited a temple run and inhabited by foreign monks. The man who told this verse was from England. It is quite a useful rhyme for learning the 3 different forms of the sound weather/whether. My students liked it.

Talking of the weather as we like to do in this country probably because it’s so unpredictable, my latest wedding was dominated by it as they all are. The trouble with this day was that there was heavy mizzle (that’s right not even drizzle) all day which shot to pieces any ideas of shooting outside. Some shots were taken in the open but you end up with fine droplets all over the lens and if using a flash then the droplets reflect the light and show in the photo.

Of course this rain doesn’t halt proceedings (the show must go on) as there are always areas indoors to get the required images. However it is a big shame. This wedding started at Millhouses Church and then went to St Paul’s Hotel in the City Centre. Not being able to go outside to the Peace Gardens and the surrounding area was very annoying. Such good backdrops unusable. I as grateful for the Winter Gardens though as at least you can shoot in there whatever the weather. Unfortunately there was a fashion exhibition on that day which meant that half of the floor space was taken up and there were more people than normal.

To be honest things were against me that day. Why does it always rain on me is it because I cried when I was seventeen? (song lyrics).

Dear Guy
Just to say thank you for the album of Ellen and Ashley’s wedding – it is absolutely beautiful. It’s actually the loveliest wedding album we have ever seen and several of our friends have said the same. If you need any recommendations or references please feel free to pass on our comments. We wish you every success in your future work, and if our as yet unmarried son ever gets round to it we will be in touch again!
With very best wishes
Corrynne

4th December 2010. The snow was thick and I had to make it out along Ringinglow road to the house of the mother of the bride. Thankfully the roads were OK although not long before the journey would not have been possible and I would have had to wade thigh deep in snow with my camera held in safety above my head. This day began with shots of the bride and her bridesmaids getting ready at the house. There were many family members milling about looking nervous but also an excited atmosphere and plenty of smiles. I like to have the opportunity to spend some time with the bride prior to the ceremony as it allows quality time to get some really beautiful photos.

The Roller arrived and the party headed out into the snow to move off to the church on Ringinglow road. I managed to overtake them as they were in a classic car without the acceleration of mine. I stopped ahead of them and got a great landscape shot of the car, the road, a line of trees and the snow covered fields. I then overtook them (I wasn’t speeding) and got to the church before they arrived. Parking was a nightmare and I nearly got stuck on a snow covered road, just a little stressful. Luckily the wedding car must have gone at snails pace as I managed to get parked, grab all my kit and get set up to take a shot of father and daughter walking towards the church with snow all around.

Inside the church was a bit of a lighting challenge as always as they are huge dark places. I alternated between direct flash lighting and incredibly high ISO to cover all available exposures. The interior of the church was a great backdrop with high arches and an area behind the mass to get up above everyone and look down. I experienced a very gospel ceremony which is nice to see as the congregation were really passionate.

After the ceremony I took the bride and groom out into the snow (their idea) to get some beautiful posed shots in the diminishing light. We then hung around in the lobby for a while and I got some reportage work done before driving to Whirlowbrook hall for the reception. On arrival there was parking carnage because of the snow but eventually I got parked and inside.

Now it was time for the formal group shots. We gained access to one of the rooms upstairs which was very classically decorated and also really easy to light (a miracle). This made for some classy group shots which we got through in plenty of time before the guests went to dine. Time for a breather where I was able to back up all the shots taken, have a quick look at them, re charge camera batteries, format cards and have something to eat.

Following dinner were the speeches which were a bit awkward to photograph as I couldn’t get very close to the subjects. The guests then mingled and I was able to get posed shots of the cake cutting and some extra family shots requested. I had eyed up some brilliant backgrounds around the hotel and took the bride and groom off again to photograph them in front of these.

That was that 10pm and time to go. What a day no wonder I’m grey!
